2023 – ECO-Unit

History

The ECO-Unit is a four-story structure – the first two floors serve as a vibrant hub for communal interactions, office spaces, and a shared dining experience to foster a sense of community. While the two upper floors will host single units and family units. The architectural design of the ECO-Unit prioritizes sustainable materials such as repurposed shipping containers.

The heart of our design lies in an innovative modular system that adapts to the evolving needs of the community. The modular units are flexible, allowing for easy reconfiguration to accommodate varying family sizes.

Architecture

The custom wave facade gives a new and fresh feel by balancing the use of light and shadows as well as a natural appearance. Our goal revolves solely around an affordable, yet beautiful design with Styrofoam insulated panels, as well as recycled shipping containers to conserve energy for a very long amount of time while saving money.

Engineering

The heart of our design lies in an innovative modular system that adapts to the evolving needs of the community. The modular units are flexible, allowing for easy reconfiguration to accommodate varying family sizes.

Efficiency

The ECO-Unit already focuses on small annual spendings while maximizing the use of any material or area with features such as vertical shading devices that reduce solar heat gain professionally designed into the building,

Grid-Interactivity

The Eco-Unit will operate using a comprehensive solar power system, ensuring more than enough energy supply to the building throughout the daylight hours. Through integration with the electrical grid, extra solar energy generated during peak sunlight hours will be fed back into the grid, helping to further alleviate the grid stability.

Life Cycle

The Eco-Unit has a strong focus on reducing embodied and operational carbon in the building design. To reduce embodied carbon and obtain a lower carbon footprint due to construction, we plan to incorporate reused materials such as shipping containers, brick, and wood. It is our objective to incorporate green systems/technologies such as minimizing natural light, smart building controls, and efficient solar panels to ensure optimal performance in the maintenance and operation of the building.
