Who We Are
The Missouri University of Science and Technology Solar House Design Team empowers future generations to build a more sustainable world. Formerly, every two years a multidisciplinary team of undergraduate students designs and constructs a solar-powered home, collaborating with faculty and industry advisers to ensure a successful design. The Team provided opportunities for students to expand their knowledge and innovation skills regarding the integration of architecture and technology with dwelling space design and function. They learned how to collaborate in a team environment and gain hands-on experience in design and construction. Other skills such as product development, marketing, and financial management are developed through administrative duties necessary to run the Team, further preparing members for future leadership roles in industry.
Currently, our team competes in the Design Challenge – where our team of undergraduate students from various STEAM fields design a home specifically for a certain target demographic, often selecting those that are overlooked regarding affordable and accessible housing. We partner with organizations that seek to provide financial aid, education, and assistance through all of life’s challenges.
What We Do
The Missouri S&T Solar House Design Team competes in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, an annual event that challenges collegiate teams to design (and sometimes build) 100% solar-powered houses that are marketable, cost-effective, and energy-efficient. The winning design blends innovation, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and efficiency. This competition monitors the start-to-finish design process, encouraging team members to reach out to donors and sponsors to obtain necessary funds and materials. Our team has been competing in the Solar Decathlon since its creation in 2002, making 2024 our 22nd anniversary of competing.
Mission Statement
The Missouri University of Science and Technology Solar House Team seeks to better the University, community, and environment by uniting students and advisers of diverse backgrounds and skill sets to design 100% solar-powered homes that are marketable, affordable, and efficient. This experiential learning opportunity allows students to collaborate in a team environment to gain skills that build upon the foundation of in-class curriculum and will help them succeed as leaders in their respective industries, while promoting sustainable development, designing for the future, and inspiring others to do the same.

Make a Donation
Solar House is beyond thankful for our sponsors and their continued support to our team. These homes were possible because of our sponsors’ contributions, whether they were monetary, physical, or time donations. Every donation contributed to Solar House is very appreciated and helps us design and compete in the U.S Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon each year – taking us each one step closer to accomplishing our goals.
